A light-emitting diode (LED) device is provided. The LED device has raised semiconductor regions formed on a substrate. LED structures are formed over the raised semiconductor regions such that bottom contact layers and active layers of the LED device are conformal layers. The top contact layer has a planar surface. In an embodiment, the top contact layers are continuous over a plurality of the raised semiconductor regions while the bottom contact layers and the active layers are discontinuous between adjacent raised semiconductor regions. |

1. A method, comprising:
forming a mask layer over a substrate; patterning the mask layer into a plurality of mask segments separated by a plurality of openings; forming, through an epitaxial-growth process, a plurality of non-planar components in the openings, wherein the non-planar components are formed in a manner such that they prevent the substrate from being exposed; forming a first contact layer over the non-planar components, wherein the first contact layer has a first type of conductivity; forming a light-emitting active layer over the first contact layer; and forming a second contact layer over the light-emitting layer and over the mask segments, wherein the second contact layer has a second type of conductivity different from the first type.
