A method comprising: storing, by a network device, a plurality of parameters identifying a respective quality of service (QoS) to apply to a corresponding plurality of different types of data flows; initiating, by the network device, establishment of a network channel between a source device and a destination device through an optical network; receiving, by the network device, first and second data flows, of a plurality of data flows, from the source device and destined for the destination device, the first data flow having a first data flow type of the plurality of different types of data flows,the second data flow having a second data flow type of the plurality of different types of data flows,the first data flow type being different from the second data flow type; identifying, by the network device, a first QoS to apply to the first data flow based on the first data flow type and based on the plurality of parameters; identifying, by network device, a second QoS to apply to the second data flow based on the second data flow type and based on the plurality of parameters, the second QoS being different than the first QoS; applying, by network device, the first QoS to the first data flow to form a processed first data flow; applying, by network device, the second QoS to the second data flow to form a processed second data flow; and transmitting, by the network device and via the network channel, the processed first data flow and the processed second data flow towards the destination device.
