摘要 <p>807,212. Selective printing. NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL. Mav 3, 1955 [May 13, 1954], No. 12860/55. Class 100(4) A high-speed printer comprises a series of spaced, individually operated printing members 31-40 Fig. 1 or 78 Figs. 12, 13, each adapted independently to print a single predetermined one of a set of symbols, and means for effecting movement of a record sheet 30 in the direction in which said series extends, operation of each of the members 31-40 or 78 being effected whenever there is in register with such members an area on the sheet 30 which there is to be inscribed the symbol on the member. As shown in Fig. 1 the output from a computer 51 is fed via delay mechanisms 41, 50 to ten printing members 31-40 carrying the characters 1-0 or if necessary the letters of the alphabet. If a number having e.g. a first digit 3 is to be printed a signal from the computor is channelled into a delay mechanism 43 which imposes a printing delay equivalent to three forward steps of the record 30, so that printing does not occur until the first printing area on the record is below the printing member 43 to print the numeral 3. If the second digit is numeral 1, this is channelled into delay unit 41 and printing is delayed until the second printing area is below printing member 31, i.e., before the first digit is printed by member 33 in the first printing area. In a like manner the other delay units delay printing corresponding amounts, e.g., unit 40 effects a delay of ten steps of the record 30. The record 30, Fig. 8, may be advanced counter clockwise by a roller 57 pressing the record to the inside of a shell 52, the amount of each advance of the record being dependent on the difference in the perimeters of the shell 52 and roller 57. Roller 57 is freely rotatable nn an eccentric 56 fixed to a shaft 55 which turns clockwise. As shown in Figs. 12, 13, the record 30 is fed, either intermittently or continuously by a roller 73 mounted on an eccentric 72, past ten columns of ten printers 78 so that for every revolution of a cyclic shaft 65 the record advances from one numeral of each column of printers 78 to the next. The roller 73 may be mounted between fine tooth gear wheels meshing with internal teeth on a shell 62 carrying the printing members 78. The printing members 78 may comprise a character formed on the end of a solenoid of an electro-magnet which effects impression by impact through an ink ribbon or alternatively the electromagnets may be operated to move the type-carrying member inwardly a certain amount and impression being effected by the rolling action of the record as the eccentric 72 is rotated. The latter method has the advantage that the timing of the operation of the electro-magnets may occur any time within one revolution and simplifies synchronization between the printing members and the feed of the record. Further the amplitude of the current required to move the solenoid inwardly without effecting printing is much smaller than that required for the first method. In operation a line of information delivered from a computor simultaneously, is not printed simultaneously, but may require ten revolutions of the shaft 65. A storage device is accordingly provided so that the information is fed to the printer at discrete intervals and properly in phase with the revolutions of the shaft 65. A decoder is also necessary if the computor delivery its information as binary numbers. Specification 807,213 is referred to.</p>
