An ultraviolet (UV) liquid disinfection system (100) and method are described. The system (100) includes a conduit to carry liquid to be disinfected (110), the conduit (110) having an inlet (114) to receive the liquid and an outlet (116) to discharge the liquid; a UV source (120) configured to illuminate the liquid within the conduit (110); a liquid salinity detector (130) to measure a value indicative of the liquid salinity; and a controller (140) coupled to the salinity detector (130) and configured to receive from the liquid salinity detector (130) the measured value and to determine a desired salinity- adjusted UV dose level based on the measured value and predetermined data correlating salinity levels to respective UV dose levels.
