发明名称 Anti-rust compositions
摘要 Rust-inhibiting compositions comprise an oil, a condensation product of formaldehyde and an alkoxylated phenol, and an oil-soluble alkali metal naphthenate or sulphonate. The oil may be a synthetic or natural (e.g. mineral) oil. It may have a viscosity of 100 to 500 SUS/100 DEG F. and may be thickened with petrolatum. When used for a rust-preventing paint the oil may be a drying oil and bitumens or coal tar and pigments such as metal oxides may be included. Phenols mentioned are C6-20 mono- and dialkyl phenols, e.g. n- or iso-octyl, ditertiary- or iso-butyl, amyl, and heptyl phenols. They may be alkoxylated by reaction with a C2-6 alkylene oxide, e.g. ethylene or propylene oxide, in the presence of an inert solvent such as a hydrocarbon or by condensation with an alkylene or polyalkylene glycol, preferably containing 1 to 4 glycol residues. The condensation with formaldehyde may be performed with an alkaline catalyst such as ammonia or sodium or potassium hydroxide or a Friedel-Crafts catalyst such as a BF3/ether complex at 150-160 DEG C. for 5 to 7 hours. Ammonia may be incorporated in the resin. The preferred sulphonates are sodium sulphonates and may be petroleum (e.g. mahogany) sulphonates. Mixed sulphonates containing 12 to 25, preferably 14 to 18, carbon atoms (M.W. 400 to 600) may be used. C8-18 sodium naphthenates are the preferred naphthenates. Optional ingredients mentioned are animal fatty acids or wool fats, e.g. suint, lanolin or degras; polyvalent metal (e.g. Pb, Cu, Fe, Sn, Zn, Mn) salts of sulphonated fatty acids, naphthenic acids or phenols; and polyalcohols derived from natural animal or vegetable fats such as suint, degras, lanolin, spermacetic oil, beeswax and Chinese wax. In examples, 1 mol. each of octyl phenol and ethylene oxide are reacted at 130 DEG C. with a BF3/ether complex catalyst and 100 g. of the product condensed with 15 g. of paraformaldehyde with and without ammonia using the same catalyst. A mineral oil (32.1 cs./37.8 DEG C.) concentrate of the resin without ammonia and a spindle oil concentrate of that with ammonia are incorporated in compositions comprising lanolin, sodium petroleum sulphonates and a naphthenic mineral oil (100 SUS/100 DEG F.) or white spirit.ALSO:Rust-inhibiting compositions comprise an oil, a condensation product of formaldehyde and an alkoxylated phenol, and an oil-soluble metal naphthenate or sulphonate (see Group III). The phenols may be alkoxylated by reaction with a C2-6 alkylene oxide, e.g. ethylene or propylene oxide, preferably 1-4 mols., in the presence of an inert solvent such as a hydrocarbon, or by condensation with an alkylene or polyalkylene glycol, preferably containing 1 to 4 glycol residues. Phenols mentioned are C6-20 mono-and di-alkyl phenols, e.g. n- or iso-octyl, di-tertiary- or iso-butyl, amyl, and heptyl phenols. They may be condensed with formaldehyde, trioxymethylene or paraformaldehyde, using an alkaline catalyst, e.g. NH3, NaOH, KOH, or a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, e.g. a BF3/ether complex, at 150-160 DEG C. for 5 to 7 hours. Ammonia may be incorporated in the condensation product, e.g. by injecting ammonia into the aldehyde/phenol mixture at 50-60 DEG C. prior to raising the temperature to 100-160 DEG C. for 5-7 hours. In examples, condensation products were obtained by: (i) reacting equimolar proportions of octyl phenol and ethylene oxide using a BF3/ether complex catalyst at 120-130 DEG C. to obtain 100 g. of alkoxylated phenol which was then condensed with 15 g. of paraformaldehyde at 110-120 DEG C. for 6 hours using the same catalyst; and (ii) repeating (i) except that the phenol and formaldehyde were heated to only 60-65 DEG C. for the first 5 hours and ammonia was passed into the mixture. Passage of ammonia was then stopped and the mixture heated at 150 DEG C. for a further two hours.
