PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical lathe that machines a workpiece while rotating it around a longitudinal axis extending in a vertical direction, and that achieves shortening of the machining time and reduction in the number of the components and further prevents decrease in a vertical machinable range of the workpiece. SOLUTION: The vertical lathe includes a tool holder 18 that is supported on the lower end of a ram 14 and that holds each of a plurality of tool 101, 102 in a posture in which the edges 101c, 102c of the tools 101, 102 protrude outward in a view from a center axis, wherein the plurality of tools 101, 102 are arranged with prescribed spaces around the center axis extending parallel to the rotary axis of the workpiece. The ram 14 includes: a ram body 42 which has in the inside a storage space 42a extending in a perpendicular moving axis direction; a support shaft part 44 which is inserted into the storage space 42a in a posture extending in the perpendicular moving axis direction, which is supported from the outside on the ram body 42 so as to be rotatable around the axis, and which coaxially supports the tool holder 18 by protruding downward from the ram body 42; and a support shaft part driving device 48 which rotates the support shaft part 44 around the shaft.
