Ferrous stock for vitreous enamelling is produced by hot rolling, to an intermediate gauge, a ferrous material containing at least 0.02% carbon, cooling the material from above its A1 temperature at a relatively slow rate (50-100 DEG F per hour) to form massive carbides, cold rolling with a reduction of at least 25% without intervening anneal to elongate and fragment the massive carbides. The material may be cooled directly from rolling or may be reheated and cooled to form the massive carbides, and, after cooling, may be normalized, decarbonized, or treated to roughen the surface. The initial carbon content may be between 0.025% and 0.08% and after decarbonizing may be 0.01%. Specification 674,490 is referred to.
|
