A method for backing up user data stored on a first computer in a network comprises: transmitting a back-up request message to a plurality of other computers over the network including a poll, survey or query asking the extent to which each computer complies with one or more selection criteria; selecting a computer based on the replies or responses; transmitting and storing the data in storage associated with the selected computer. The data to backup may be user settings or preferences which are to be retrieved after updating the operating system (OS) of the first computer. The data may have an identifier so that it can be found and retrieved. The data may be deleted from the selected computer once retrieval is complete. The selection criteria may include the capacity or available storage space allocated to the computer; the number of backups stored, and whether a power management process is active. Unsuitable or unavailable computers might not respond to the first computers request. |
