A tubeless pneumatic tyre having a carcase 1 of reinforcing plies anchored to spaced bead cores 2 and lined with a rubber liner 3 has a chafer strip 7 around each bead, the strips 7 comprising woven fabric disposed with the warp elements 8 extending circumferentially of the bead and the weft elements 9 extending in radial planes containing the tyre axis, the weft elements 9 being monofilaments of rayon, nylon or like non-porous synthetic textile material, and the warp elements 8 comprising twisted filaments of cotton, rayon, nylon or the like. The fabric may be of plain or leno, open weave with a rubber coating calendered on each side to fill the weave spaces. The element 8, 9 may be of round or rectangular section and the fabric may have a greater number of warp elements 8 than weft elements 9 per unit area. The chafer strip may extend around the bead as shown in Fig. 1 from the point 7<SP>11</SP> where it abuts or underlies the liner 3, to the point 71 radially beyond the outermost point of engagement of the bead with its associated wheel rim flange. |
