A composition suitable for the production of fibres and filaments comprises a mixture of polyacrylonitrile and a binary copolymer of allyl alcohol or a substituted allyl alcohol with a vinyl pyridine. The vinyl pyridine may be 2-, 3- or 4-vinyl, 2-ethyl-5-vinyl, 2-vinyl-5-ethyl, 2-methyl - 5 - vinyl, or 2 - vinyl - 5 - methyl pyridine or 2-vinyl quinoline, and the substituted allyl alcohol may have one or more methyl, ethyl, propyl, isobutyl, isoamyl or chlorine substituuents in various positions. The composition may be spun from solution in dimethylformamide and may be dyed. Allyl alcohol may be copolymerized with 2-vinyl pyridine using potassium persulphate as catalyst.
