The present invention relates to a system and a method for creating, distributing, and implementing virtual vehicle keys that provide safe access to vehicles without conventional physical keys. A back-end server creates a cryptographically secured virtual vehicle key for a selected vehicle and transmits same to a user's smart phone. The user may employ their smart phone to transmit the virtual vehicle key to a control unit of the vehicle via a near-field communication link. The control unit verifies the virtual vehicle key and unlocks the vehicle as appropriate. |
