The method involves entering the sensor data in the cells of a digital occupancy grid (10) depending on the position of a motor vehicle relative to the detected partial area, where the sensor data is accumulated to characterize the detected echo signal. A probability is determined, with which a portion of an object is characterized by the sensor data entering in the cells. The object is located in the detected partial area of the environment. A free space not occupied with objects is entered in the occupancy grid.
