A magnetic coupling apparatus 20 for transferring energy to or from a flywheel, said coupling apparatus comprising first and second movable members 22, 24, each having one or more magnets 30, 34 arranged thereon, and a retainer 36 for retaining the one or more magnets 30 arranged on the first movable member, wherein the first movable member is arranged to be coupled to a flywheel. The flywheel is preferably located in a vacuum, and the magnetic coupling transfers the rotation through a hermetically sealed chamber. The retainer may be a winding, an interference fit sleeve or a push fit sleeve. The retainer may be formed of a retaining material, such as carbon or glass and an adhesive, preferably a thermoset plastic such as an epoxy resin. The adhesive may further comprise metal oxide fragments, such as zinc oxide or aluminium oxide. |
