Oil-soluble complex ammino compounds employed as oil additives (see Group III), are formed between (a) a polyvalent metal salt of an organic acid and (b) a di- or poly-amine. The polyvalent metal of reactant (a) may be Zn, Cd, Sn, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cu, Fe(ferrous), Hg, Ag, Mn, Pt, Pd, Ru, Os or Ir, while salt of reactant (a) may be a carboxylate, a sulphonate or a salt of a mono- or di-ester of phosphoric acid. The salt may contain alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl or aryl groupings and these may carry substituents such as hydroxyl or esterified carboxyl groups or halogen atoms. Suitable salts are the acetates, octoates, laurates, oleates, napthenates, benzoates, salicylates, petroleum sulphonates, alkylated aryl sulphonates and long chain alkyl and alkaryl phosphates. The amine (b) may be ethylenediamine, diethylene triamine, one or more polyethylene polyamines, pierazine, p-phenylene diamine, the diamines R11NHCH2 CH2CH2NH2 (where R11 is an alkyl group derived from a fatty acid) sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Duomeen" and the heterocyclic nitrogen compounds sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Bitran". In the examples, the preparation is described of complexes from (1) zinc naphthenate and diethylene triamine, (2) zinc napthenate and "Duomeen C", (3) zinc acetate and "Duomeen C", (4) zinc acetate, zinc napthenate and "Duomeen C" and (5) zinc salt of crude wool grease and "Duomeen C". According to the Provisional Specification reactant (a) employed in the formation of the complex ammino compound, may alternatively be a polyvalent metal phenate, mercaptide, enolate or salt of an inorganic acid (e.g. a phosphate, nitrate, borate, chromate or nitrite). Specifications 798,601 and 871,144 are referred to.ALSO:An oil-based composition, suitable as a lubricant or rust-preventing composition, comprises a major proportion of a mineral or synthetic oil and a minor proportion of an oil-soluble complex amino compound formed between (a) a polyvalent metal salt of an organic acid and (b) a di- or poly-amine. Synthetic oils mentioned are polyglycol ethers and diesters of dicarboxylic acids. The polyvalent metal of reactant (a) may be Zn, Cd, Sn, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cu, Fe (ferrous), Hg, Ag, Mn, Pt, Pd, Ru, Os or Ir, while the salt of reactant (a) may be a carboxylate, a sulphonate or a salt of a mono- or di-ester of phosphoric acid. The salt may contain alkyl cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl or aryl groupings and these may carry substituents such as hydroxyl or esterified carboxyl groups or halogen atoms. Suitable salts are the acetates, octoates, laurates, oleates, naphthenates, benzoates, salicylates, petroleum sulphonates, alkylated aryl sulphonates and long chain alkyl and alkaryl phosphates. The amine (b) may be ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, one or more polyethylene polyamines, piperazine, p-phenylene diamine, the diamines R11NHCH2CH2CH2NH2 (where R11 is an alkyl group derived from a fatty acid) sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Duomeen" and the heterocyclic nitrogen compounds sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Bitran". The oilbased composition may contain additional ingredients such as detergents (e.g. metal salts of mahogany sulphonic acids) and antioxidants (e.g. zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates, metal alkyl phenol sulphides and phosphorized sulphurized terpenes). The oil-based composition may be a lubricant for steam turbines or for internal combustion engines (especially for small two-stroke engines or for the cylinders of marine diesel engines), or a storage oil or slushing composition. In examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described which contain (i) "Duomeen C" complexed with zinc naphthenate, zinc acetate, zinc oleate, nickel mahogany sulphonate, lead naphthenate, chromium caproate or cobalt stearate, (ii) zinc naphthenate complexed with diethylene triamine or "Bitran P" or (iii) lead naphthenate complexed with triethylene tetramine. In some examples, the compositions also contain sodium mahogany sulphonate or basic barium mahogany sulphonate. A composition is also described consisting of di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate and the zinc naphthenate/"Duomeen C" complex. For comparison purposes, a mineral lubricating oil composition is described which contains zinc dihexyl dithiophosphate and basic barium mahogany sulphonate. According to the Provisional Specification reactant (a), employed in the formation of the complex amino compound, may alternatively be a polyvalent metal phenate, mercaptide, enolate or salt of an inorganic acid (e.g. a phosphate, nitrate, borate, chromate or nitrite).
