Olefines containing 2 to 8 carbon atoms are polymerized by the low pressure process using titanium trichloride as catalyst and as activator a mixture of aluminium triethyl and diethyl aluminium chloride in a molar ratio within the range of 10:90 to 40:60. The olefine may be ethylene, propylene, butene-1 or pentene-1 and mixtures of two or more of these may be copolymerized. The polymerization may be carried out in an inert solvent (which is free from oxygen), such as a petroleum fraction or a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, e.g. pentane, hexane, octane, cyclohexane or methyl-cyclohexane. The polymerization may be made continuous and the olefin, catalyst and/or the activator may be added during the polymerization; the polymerization may be stopped by the addition of isopropanol. The titanium trichloride may be made by subjecting the reaction product of titanium tetrachloride with an organo-aluminium compound to a thermal treatment, optionally followed by repeated washing with an inert solvent. The activator may be made, in the presence of an inert solvent or not, from aluminium triethyl and aluminium diethyl chloride or from aluminium triethyl and aluminium sesquichloride or trichloride. The polymer products consist predominantly of the isotactic variety. Specification 799,392 is referred to. |
