Olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons are polymerized in the presence of an inert liquid hydrocarbon diluent and a catalyst complex prepared in the presence of chlorobenzene and consisting of the reaction product of an alkyl metal, i.e. a metallic compound containing at least one alkyl group directly attached to the metal, and a compound of a metal of Group metal, and a compound of a metal of Group IVA to VIA of the Periodic Table. The olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon may be ethylene, propylene, n-butene, isobutylene, higher alkenes containing 8 to 10 carbon atoms, butadiene, or isoprene. The alkyl metal may be a compound of the formula R2AlX or R3Al in which R is an alkyl group containing up to 10 carbon atoms. The exemplified catalyst is a complex of diethyl aluminium chloride and titanium tetrachloride. The hydrocarbon diluent may be pentane, n-heptane, eicosane, kerosene, or petroleum light or heavy naphtha. Specification 796,845 is referred to. |
