Classes 120(3) and 142(4) A crimped or curled yarn 12, Fig. 2, is produced by tufting e.g. by needle tufting in a warp-wise direction, a yarn 10, Fig. 1, of mohair, wool, nylon, polyesters or mixture thereof with regenerated cellulose fibre, into a backing material e.g. burlap, to form a tufted pile fabric; subjecting the fabric to a setting treatment e.g. with hot water or steam, which may be combined with dyeing, to set the loops in the tufted yarn; removing the yarn from the backing material. The yarn 12 may then be woven as the pile yarn in a fabric and cut to allow the yarn ends to twist according to set conformations and thereby entangle to form a dense pile, Fig. 3 (not shown); alternatively, the yarn 12 may be retufted into the same backing material in which it was set. In a continuous process, Fig. 4, backing material 20 is fed from a roll 21 to a tufting machine 16, which inserts pile yarn 17, and through a setting chamber 22, the crimped pile yarn 23 is pulled from the fabric and fed to a tufting machine 24 which inserts the yarn 23 into the material 20 and the retufted fabric 25 is wound on a roll 26. The backing material may be in the form of a closed loop into which the yarn is continuously tufted and from which the crimped yarn is continuously unravelled and wound on a cone, Fig. 5 (not shown). As shown in Fig. 6, a loop of backing material 40 passes beneath a tufting machine 41 and through a setting chamber 42, the yarns 43 are tufted into the material 40, set, unravelled and fed directly to a loom 44 as warp yarn for a woven fabric 45. |
