Methods, apparatus and computer software for determining a characteristic of a signal transmitted from a wireless transmitter, using a measurement receiver to measure the signal prior to transmission from the transmitter. A first characteristic, such as a first value proportional to the average power of the signal 110, calculated in respect of a first time period t1, and a second characteristic, such as a second value proportional to the average power of the signal, calculated in respect of a second time period t2, are used to extrapolate a measured characteristic during transmittal, measured over the first time period, such as measured average power for the transmitted signal over the first time period, to determine a determined characteristic, such as the average power value of the transmitted signal, for the second time period. The arrangement allows an average power for a transmitted signal to be extrapolated without requiring operation of the measurement received over the whole of the second time period and allows simple operation using average values rather than requiring complex hardware to perform correlation logic with multiple single samples. Rather than average power other characteristics such as average magnitude, RMS power, average amplitude etc can be determined. The first period may be of short duration compared to the second time period and may be a different time period, overlap, or lie within the second time period. Determining the determined characteristic comprises scaling the measured characteristic by the ratio of the second characteristic to the first characteristic. The first and second characteristics may be determined by integrating the signal supplied to the transmitter, possibly in the digital domain, during the respective time periods. The arrangement may allow efficient checking for compliance with a given communication scheme for a particular transmitter and allow power control, radiated power variation, power amplifier control, antenna tuner control etc. |
