The method involves inputting information in a device of a vehicle and activating a non-speech input mode by an operating element for inputting manual information. An object is detected in a surrounding area of the operating element. A non-speech input mode is deactivated if no object is detected in the surrounding area of the operating element. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for input speech to a vehicle.
