The method involves conveying a film (10) between two cross members (20, 30), and determining distance between the cross members and a film surface by distance sensors (22, 23). The determined distance is transmitted to a data processing device for calculating material thickness of the film based on measurement values of the sensors. The cross members are determined as bending-resistant granite rails, where carriages (21, 31) are moved on the rails. The carriages are attached to one of the sensors for executing distance measurements at different measuring points during crossing of the film.
