The present invention provides silicon oxide that is useful as an anode active material in an anode for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having excellent cycle performance while maintaining the high battery capacity and low volume expansion of the silicon oxide; a manufacturing method thereof; an anode using the same; a lithium ion secondary battery; and an electrochemical capacitor. The silicon oxide for the anode of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery has a cobalt content of 2 to 200 ppm.
