<p>Monitoring apparatus for providing vehicle telematics data comprises a sensor 2 for sensing vehicle and engine motion induced vibration in part of a vehicle and for generating vibration associated data. The sensor is coupled to part of the vehicle. Engine and motion induced vibration associated data is processed to extract data representative of a characteristic of the vehicle or the engine. This data is then transferred to a communication device 26 and can be used of compile telematics data for the vehicle. A vibration sensor may be a three axis accelerometer that can determine its orientation from the gravitational force. The communication with the communication device can be via a wired or wireless communication protocol. The monitoring apparatus can be connected to a diagnostics port of the vehicle and may be powered either from the vehicle or via an internal battery. Vehicle and engine characteristics or parameters which can be determined or estimated from the vibration data include engine revolutions (RPM), wheel RPM, currently engaged gear, idle frequency, stroke cycle, the number of cylinders, vehicle speed, engine type or vehicle type. Impacts and other motion information can be determined from the vibration data.</p> |
