A contrast improving apparatus and a method thereof are provided to minimize gradation agglomeration by setting inclination of a corresponding gray curve so as to be closer to 1 in a gradation area where plural image pixels are distributed. A contrast improving apparatus comprises an average brightness level input unit(31), a contrast curve generating unit(32), and a mapping part(33). The average brightness level input unit is inputted with an average brightness level value of a previous frame. The contrast curve generating unit produces low, middle, and high gray curves based on the average brightness level value of the previous frame and a set value of a user. In a gray area where plural image pixels are distributed, inclination of a corresponding gray curve is set to be closer to 1. Inclination of a gray curve of a corresponding gray area is set to be closer to zero. The mapping part outputs a brightness signal with an improved contrast by mapping the brightness signal to the contrast curve. |
