The present invention relates to a shaft seal, which comprises a shafting unit which is fixed to the rear of a ship in order to support a shaft, for providing propulsion for the ship, to be able to rotate on the hull, and which accommodates the shaft; a water swelling index member which is included in a gap between the shafting unit and the shaft in order to block a fluid from passing the gap, and whose volume expands to clog the gap by being in contact with moisture; a packing member which is included in the gap along the extension direction of the shaft; and a pressurizing unit which is inserted into the gap at one side of the shafting unit, and pressurizes the water swelling index member and the packing member. According to a shaft seal prepared by the present invention, a water swelling index member, which has properties of expanding the volume thereof by being in contact with moisture, is included in a gap between a shafting unit, for accommodating the shaft, and the shaft in order to effectively block the inflow of seawater into the inside of the hull. |
