The device has a movable base (350) slidable between walls of a compression chamber. A moving unit (352) moves the base parallel to the walls. A fixing unit hangs handles of a bag outside the chamber. A closing unit includes a lid (330) for closing the chamber on a surface opposite to the base. The lid comprises a sealable opening (331) contacting with an interior of the bag. A gripping unit grips the bag handles without gripping the walls or a skirt of the bag. An independent claim is also included for a method for compacting waste to be filled in a bag.
