The method involves detecting skew pulling effects and function of steering movement of the steerable vehicle wheels through the passage in neutral position induced by the steering assisting electric motor. The established asymmetric required for engine torque or appropriate substitute measure for the impact of unbalanced drag effects is determined. The steering assisting electric motor is operated with constant speed. The offset to the neutral position of the steering system is determined. An independent claim is included for an electronic control unit.
