In the present disclosure, methods and apparatuses are disclosed that enable a device to determine whether a contact is in a shared environment based on an audio sample of a voice call. More specifically, an audio sample of a voice call is generated. A controller then determines whether a contact is in an environment of the mobile device based on the audio sample.

1. A method, comprising:
generating, by a mobile device, an audio sample of a voice received via a call; associating, by the mobile device, the audio sample with a contact participating in the call, wherein the contact is included in a contact list of the mobile device; and sampling, by the mobile device, audio from an environment to determine whether the contact is in the environment, wherein the determination is based, in part, on the audio sample of the voice.
