The apparatus (5) has a sensor e.g. photonic mixing device (PMD) camera, for detection of characteristics related to a vehicle occupant. A sensor is arranged on a steering wheel (3) of a vehicle. A measurement signal of the sensor is output with respect to transforming a measuring signal allocated to a steering wheel angle to a predetermined reference steering angle such that information contained in a transformed measuring signal is independent of the steering wheel angle for detecting characteristics related to the vehicle occupant.
