According to the present invention, a distance sensing means including an optical sensor serving as a sensing device is installed on an outer surface of a machining head which is an optimal installing position. A method includes the steps of measuring the outer size of a section according to the kind of a bar-shaped workpiece based on detected information about a distance by which the distance sensing means is separated from the outer surface of the bar-shaped workpiece; measuring the radius of curvature of an edge; and checking whether a clamping center and the center of a section of the bar-shaped workpiece are on the same line. Thus, information about the bar-shaped workpiece of a laser machining apparatus for machining a bar-shaped workpiece can be measured.
