The method involves providing a shaft with an encoder wheel having markings that are triggered when moving past sensor signals, where the segment times are calculated (110) from the time interval of the signals. A reversal of direction of the shaft is detected (150) depending on the segment times, after detection of direction of rotation of a crankshaft. The stored segment times are compared with each other. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program for determining storage position of a shaft of an internal combustion engine in a vehicle; and (2) an electronic storage medium for storing a computer program.
