PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably focus on a subject even when a face detection cannot be carried out upon performing an AF control on the basis of a face position.SOLUTION: The automatic focus adjustment device includes: imaging means for photoelectrically converting a subject image and generating an imaging signal; signal generation means for generating a focus signal from the imaging signal corresponding to a focus detection area; first detection means for detecting a first subject area from the imaging signal; second detection means for detecting a second subject area including the first subject area from the imaging signal; and control means for setting a focus detection area and performing a focus adjustment by controlling a focus lens drive on the basis of the focus signal. The control means sets response to a detection result of the second detection means when the focus detection area is set on the basis of the second subject area to be lower than response to a detection result of the first detection means when the focus detection area is set on the first subject area.
