In accordance with an embodiment, a method includes electronically receiving a media presentation description (MPD) from a network. The MPD describes multimedia content that includes alternative representations of a plurality of media types, and the MPD includes information indicative of how the alternative representations are encoded. The method also includes selecting one of the plurality of alternative representations for at least one of the plurality of media types based on information included in the MPD, requesting the selected one of the plurality of alternative representations piece-by-piece, and electronically receiving a piece of media data.

electronically receiving, by a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) streaming client, a media presentation description (MPD) element describing a media presentation, wherein the media presentation includes a plurality of alternative representations each of which comprising segments corresponding to an alternative encoding choice of a media content, and wherein the MPD element includes metadata for accessing segments in the plurality of alternative representations; and constructing, by the HTTP streaming client, at least a first uniform resource locator (URL) for accessing a first segment of a first one of the plurality of alternative representations, wherein the first URL is constructed in accordance with the metadata in the MPD element without relying on proprietary extensions excluded from the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) 1.1 protocol (HTTP/1.1 protocol).
