The method involves providing two road lamps (1, 2) of a street lighting system. The road lamps are turned on at different times. The two road lamps of electrical characteristics are recorded. An evaluation of the characteristics of the input with respect to the detection of a fault is executed. The two street lamps or small groups of street lamps is turned on or off in a predetermined order. Electrical properties of the road lamps are measured during the switching on or off and transmitted to an evaluation unit. An independent claim is also included for a control unit for controlling input or turn-off of street lamps in street lighting systems.
