This negative electrode material is a carbonaceous negative electrode material to be used in alkali metal ion batteries, which has an average interplanar spacing (d002) of the (002) plane of 0.340 nm or more as determined by an X-ray diffraction method using a CuKα ray source. This negative electrode material has a halogen content of 0.5 ppm or more but less than 50 ppm.
