In order to provide a multilayer hard-film-coated piston ring which can be used in engines in an environment where high mechanical and thermal burdens are imposed and which is excellent in terms of scuffing resistance, wear resistance, and unsusceptibility to coating film separation, a multilayer hard film which comprises a coating film comprising alternately superposed layers of at least two different compounds, the compound layers each comprising a nitride of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Ti, Cr, Zr, V, Hf, and Al, is deposited on the peripheral surface of a piston ring in a film thickness of 10-60 μm. |
