The method involves supplying the load current contacts (20,30) of a contactor with a load current to be switched by the contactor and detecting a time-varying voltage drop signal, which lies between the two load-current contacts. The voltage drop signal is correlated with the measurement signal current (i) or with the measurement signal voltage (u). A value corresponding with the contact resistance (R-K) is determined using the correlation. An independent claim is included for a switching contactor with a switching element.
