The present invention relates to a thermoelectric generation device for a railroad car and a method thereof. The device includes a thermoelectric generation module which is installed in a floating lever of a railroad car and outputs a voltage according to temperature difference between thermoelectric generation elements; a power conversion unit which converts the voltage outputted from the thermoelectric generation module to a charge voltage for an energy storage unit and outputs the voltage to the energy storage unit; a switch unit which supplies or blocks power stored in the energy storage unit by the charge voltage to an auxiliary power unit; and a control unit which, if a brake signal of the railroad car is inputted, controls the power conversion unit to charge the energy storage unit and controls the switch unit by comparing the power stored in the energy storage unit with a predefined reference value. According to the present invention, waste heat generated in the floating lever when the brakes are put on the railroad car can be recovered as electric energy and used as auxiliary power so that energy efficiency of the railroad car can be enhanced. |
