A residential or commercial security system can be operated in an unmonitored state, a locally monitored state, or a remotely monitored state. The invention provides a security system whereby monitoring by a remote monitoring service can be provided on-demand, in the absence of a pre-established account, for intermittent time intervals as required. The request for activation of the remote monitoring service, and financial credit thereof, can be provided via a wireless communications device such as a smart phone or smart card. Scheduling information and the required duration of the requested monitoring can also be provided via a wireless communication device. The security system may incorporate a NFC reader to identify a request for remote monitoring and to facilitate payment for the service. The remote monitoring may subsequently be conducted for a fixed period, or may be terminated by the smart phone or smart card. |
