The present invention relates to a composition to prevent and treat metabolic disorders comprising an extract of Nelumbo nucifera seed as an active ingredient. When the extract of Nelumbo nucifera seed of the present invention is processed with differentiated human fat cell and orally administered into a high fat diet Sprague-Dawley based male rat, differentiation of fat cells and expression of related genes are inhibited, thus differentiation into matured fat cells and fat accumulation are inhibited and abdominal fat decrease and blood lipid concentration are significantly improved in the high fat diet rat. Therefore, the extract of Nelumbo nucifera seed can be suitably used as a pharmaceutical composition and a health supplement to prevent and treat metabolic disorders as the active ingredient.
