PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophoretic display element having improved workability of removing microcapsules. SOLUTION: The electrophoretic display element 30 is manufactured by adhering a drive substrate 31 on which a common electrode 312 and a display electrode 311 are formed, to an electrophoretic display sheet 8A comprising a transparent substrate 32 having a transparent electrode 321 layered thereon and microcapsules 330 arranged on the transparent electrode 321 and encapsulating charged particles. The electrophoretic display sheet 8A and the drive substrate 31 are press-bonded while conductive particles 34 are interposed between the electrophoretic display sheet 8A and the common electrode 312 of the drive substrate 31. By collapsing the microcapsules 330 disposed between the transparent electrode 321 and the conductive particles 34, the conductive particles 34 are brought into contact with the transparent electrode 321 and the common electrode 312, to be made conductive.
