In a rotary pump of the outwardly-sliding vane or pivoted vane type wherein a reversal in the direction of rotation of the rotor does not effect a reversal of fluid flow through the pump, the rotor 20 is disposed within a ring member 22 which is freely mounted in the pump casing 12 in order to assume two different positions according to the direction of rotation of the rotor. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the pump chamber is composed of two sections separated by a node over which the control ring is adapted to ride.
