[Also in Group XXXIV] In a tapered roller bearing assembly 10, shown in the Figure as being interposed between a shaft 11 and a cylinder 12, a cup 15 and a cone 16 form respectively outer and inner races for tapered rollers 13, 13, the assembly being sealed at the ends by means of sealing discs 20, 30 which serve to retain lubricant in, and to exclude dirt from, the inside thereof, and also to restrict relative axial movement between the cup 15 and the cone 16. The disc 20, which fits into a groove 17 in the cone 16, comprises a rubber disc 21 reinforced by a metallic disc 22, the disc 21 being bifurcated adjacent the periphery thereof so as to form a pair of divergently-extending ribs 23, 24 which in cross-section present thin feathered edge portions 23a, 24a for engagement at an oblique angle with the internal face of the cup 15. The disc 30, which fits into a groove 18 in the cone 16, is similar to the disc 20 but is provided with a single oil-retaining feathered edge portion; it may, however, present a second feathered edge portion for engagement with the end of the cup 15 if dirt is to be excluded.
