Carbon tetrafluoride is prepared by bringing molten sodium or potassium fluoride at a temperature of at least 1200 DEG C. but below the boiling point, into intimate contact with carbon and chlorine, thereby forming alkali metal chloride and CF4, the carbon being in amount of at least 0.25 g. atoms per mol. of alkali metal fluoride and the molar ratio of total chlorine to alkali metal fluoride being between 0.3 : 1 and 0.5 : 1, and maintaining the reactants in intimate contact until the molar ratio of alkali metal chloride formed to unreacted alkali metal fluoride in the reaction mixture is at least 3 : 2. The reaction may be effected by passing a stream of chlorine together with molten alkali metal fluoride into intimate contact with the carbon, or by passing chlorine into a mixture of carbon and molten fluoride. The alkali metal fluoride may be formed in situ by using sodium or potassium fluosilicate. |
