A carton of the kind in which flaps on some walls are secured to other walls by thermoactuated adhesive has heat applied to adhesive coated areas of its blank prior to final folding. The machine described to carry out this method comprises a series of formers 9 on a chain 27, each of which engages a flat blank fed before it by means not shown and forces it through a channel. In the channel side walls 23 and end walls 5 are folded at right angles to the base 1 leaving flaps 6 protruding. The channel consists of members 12, 23 and plates 15, the latter being heated and having at each end heated plates 16. The plates 15, 16 activate the adhesive on the end walls 5 and the flaps 6 the latter passing between the plates 16 and enclosing strips 20, 25. Rails 19 prevent the plates 15, 16 wiping off the adhesive. Towards the end of the channel, converging elements 33 fold the flaps 6 on to the ends 5 and the carton is carried by the former between pressure belts, Fig. 4 (not shown), to permit setting of the adhesive. |
