Improved nestable containers

A nestable two-piece container comprises a side-wall 2 tapered downwardly and stepped inwardly at 10, the wall 11 thereafter extending downwardly either cylindrically or conically outwardly in laminated relation to the dependent flange 9 of a bottom-member 7 which is inserted upwardly into the lower end of the side-wall. The maximum diameter of the wallportion 11 beneath the step is less than the minimum diameter of the wall-portion 2 above the step so that several containers may nest, as in Fig. 4. The wall-portion 111, Fig. 5, may be bent back under the bottom-flange 109 to produce a three-ply base-ring for the container. The containers are of paper. Making the containers. The container shown in Fig. 5, is made by inserting a paper strip 1021 into a ring-die 300 the strip being held by the plug 301. A set of radially-movable die-segments 302 is arranged below the die 300, each segment having a rounded recess 302a complementary to a rounded shoulder 301a on the plug 301, and having a conical face 302b complementary to the conical surface 304b of a plug 304, abutting the plug 301. By contracting and slightly rotating the die-segments, the sidewall 1021 is formed with its step and depending skirt. The base-member 1071 is then inserted. Fig. 9, and the end of the skirt 1111 is bent over below the flange 109 of the base 1071 by a sleeve 306 in combination with a smaller plug 3041 which is partially refracted. Forcing the plug 3041 upwardly completes the lamination of the parts.
