The invention relates to a joint comprising a, preferably metal, substrate 1 joined to a body of material 2; the body of material typically having a composite portion. An outer surface of the metal substrate is provided with a fastening projection 5 comprising a stem and a plurality of branches projecting into the material of the body. A plurality of fastening projections may be provided, each of which may have a dendritic structure. The composite material may comprise a first region adjacent the metal surface comprising matrix material only, the fastening projection being received in the first region; or, the fibres of the composite may pass about or between the stem and branches of the projection. A method of manufacturing a joint is further provided wherein a volume of the second material at least partially in a liquid state is applied to the surface of the first material such that the fastening projection extends into the second material and the second material is allowed to solidify, embedding the fastening projection therein. A component comprising a joint, particularly forming portions of an aerofoil component, are also provided. |
