A blood test strip useful for venting a closed intravenous system and collecting a blood sample is described herein. The blood test strip includes a blood test strip, one or more vents, and a gripping member coupled to the proximal end of the blood test strip. The one or more vents are disposed between the distal and the proximal portions of the blood test strip.

1. A blood test strip comprising:
a blood test strip having a distal portion and a proximal portion, the distal portion being configured to be inserted into an access port of an intravenous catheter system; one or more vents disposed between the distal portion and the proximal portion of the blood test strip, the one or more vents venting gas from within the intravenous catheter system while the distal portion of the blood test strip is inserted into the access port, the one or more vents further including at least one of a hole having dimensions that permits the passage of gas and prevents the passage of blood, a gas permeable membrane, and a channel formed on an outer surface of the blood test strip, the channel having dimensions that permits the passage of gas and prevents the passage of blood; and a gripping member coupled to the proximal end of the blood test strip for removing the blood test strip from the access port.
