The present invention relates to a wheel based measuring system and a method for lifting a vehicle. The lifting system comprises: - one stationary lift; - a number of moveable lifts; - positioning means for defining a position of a wheel axle of the vehicle; - distance measuring means for determining the distance of the vehicle to a reference point; and - control means for determining the distance between two vehicle axles and steering the one or more moveable lifts to the correct position.
