The present invention relates to the use of an antisecretory protein or homologues thereof having the same properties, or certain fragments thereof in the manufacture of a medicament or a medical food for inducing improved rescue of injured or diseased nervous tissue, proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation and/or migration of an embryonic stem cell, adult stem cell, progenitor cell and/or a cell derived from a stem cell or progenitor cell, for treating a condition characterized by or associated with loss and/or gain of cells. In a preferred embodiment, the condition is a neurotrauma or a condition or disease of the CNS and/or PNS and/or ANS, for example, Alzheimer's disease. |

1. A method of treatment of a brain injury, head trauma, an ischemic injury, asphyxia, a hypoxic injury, a traumatic injury, a stroke, and/or demyelinating disorder, associated with a pathological loss of nervous tissue, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof an effective amount of:
(a) an antisecretory factor (AF) protein as shown in SEQ ID NO: 1, and/or (b) a fragment of the AF protein as shown in SEQ ID NO: 1, said fragment consisting of an amino acid sequence as shown in SEQ ID NO:3, SEQ ID NO:4, SEQ ID NO:5, or SEQ ID NO:6, and having a histidine at position 38, a serine at position 39, and a threonine at position 41 of SEQ ID NO:3, SEQ ID NO:4, SEQ ID NO:5, or SEQ ID NO:6; and/or (c) a fragment of the AF protein as shown in SEQ ID NO: 1, said fragment consisting of amino acid nos. 1-105 of SEQ ID NO:1;
or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
