An image processing apparatus includes a characteristic point extracting section and a signal processing section. The characteristic point extracting section is configured to analyze a frequency component of an inputted image and extracts a plurality of pixels characterizing the image as a plurality of characteristic points. The signal processing section is configured to perform signal processing for the plurality of extracted pixels corresponding to the respective characteristic points, produces an interpolated value based on a result of the signal processing, and rewrites a value of at least one pixel other than the characteristic points to the interpolated value.

1. An image processing apparatus, comprising:
a characteristic point extracting section configured to analyze a frequency component of an inputted image and extract a plurality of pixels characterizing the image as high level characteristic points and low level characteristic points; a wavelet producing section configured to produce a wavelet image based on the extracted pixels corresponding to the low level characteristic points, and a low frequency component of the wavelet image; and a signal processing section configured to perform signal processing for the pixels corresponding to the high level characteristic points and the low frequency component, to produce an interpolated value based on a result of the signal processing, and to rewrite a value of at least one pixel other than the characteristic points to the interpolated value.
